What's in Kanopy
The VSCS Libraries offer unlimited access to over 30,000 documentary, narrative, feature and independent films to stream in Kanopy. You can search for a specific film or director, etc., or browse by type of film or subject, or see lists of award-winners or newly added films. Any Kanopy film can be shown in a class.
Access to Kanopy
Students, faculty and staff can access Kanopy through the link above, through the library's Databases A-Z list, or on the Kanopy website. First, use your VSC credentials to log in, and then you can make an account of your own within Kanopy. Then you can use your Kanopy log-in on the Kanopy website or Kanopy app (free app, available for iOS, Android, and Amazon Fire) or on your TV.
Your Kanopy account
Making a Kanopy account allows you to go back to films you were watching, and make a watchlist and customized playlists. Making an account within Kanopy is not necessary to watch films.
Using Kanopy
In addition to watching within a browser on a computer, Kanopy is available via an array of apps on the TV, phone, and tablet.
On these mobile devices:
- Apple iOS devices
- Android phones and tablets
- Amazon Fire tablets
On these TV devices:
- Apple TV and Airplay
- Amazon Fire TV
- Android and Google TV
- Samsung TV
- Roku
- Telstra TV
- Chromecast
If you do not have access to any of the above devices, you can also view Kanopy on your television by connecting your computer to your television via HDMI cable.
Films not included in VSC subscription
The Kanopy database also contains some titles not included in the VSCS Libraries' subscription. However, if you click on one of those and you do want to view it, you can fill out the information under "Request for Access," and someone will get back to you about access to that additional film.
Showing films for campus events
Some films in Kanopy come with public performance rights, so they can legally be shown for campus events for free. You can see how to find the films that come with public performance rights on Kanopy's support site.
