When do faculty get to review deselected titles?
When do faculty get to review deselected titles – why don’t we have final say?
Answer
Collection Management is time consuming. It’s unlikely most faculty have time to review their collection areas on a regular basis, although they are welcome to view existing titles and make title recommendations at any time. Please do! It makes our job less arduous. But also keep in mind, that librarians are trained in collection management and when we are unsure about a resource, we’ll ask for assistance.
In the later stages of the deselection process, faculty are able to review deselection choices at least two times at their convenience. We distribute deselection lists via email, and also make links to those lists available on our website (See About>Library Collections>Physical Collections>Streamlining Project). Once we have taken faculty feedback into account the work of taking items off the shelf and out of the catalog begins. For physical items, there will be a location where deselected titles reside until we have time to complete the process of removing the titles from our Library Management System (LMS). Faculty are welcome to come take another look at the titles at the physical locations.
If there are any titles you want to take for a department or personal collection, just let us know, and we will hold them aside for you.
