How do you decide what to deselect?
How does the staff decide what to remove and what to keep?
Answer
Librarians use guidelines developed by professional organizations, but while there are guidelines, there are no prescriptions. Librarians consider collection management principles, institutional policies and needs, and a variety of other factors to inform their decisions. The VSCS Libraries create individualized reports that show various statistics useful in this process, such as publication date and number of checkouts. Additionally, the library consults with faculty prior to the removal of material from the collection.
